Flu Shot 101

According to the CDC, this year’s flu shot has an effectiveness of 48%. Last year its effectiveness was 47% , but in 2014 it was as low as 19%. There are many “strains” of the flu that circulate the globe every year, meaning it is hard for the CDC to know which strains to focus on specifically. All year long, 142
national influenza centers in 113 different countries collect data on the flu viruses monitor which strains of the virus are making people sick, how efficiently those strains are spreading, and how well previous vaccines have worked to combat their targeted viruses. All of these smaller centers then pass the results from their wide-reaching investigations to one of five World Health Organization Collaborating Centers for Reference and Research on Influenza: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the “CDC”) in Atlanta, Georgia; the National Institute for Medical Research in London, UK; the Victoria Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia; the National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Tokyo, Japan; and the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention in Beijing, China. Then, five representatives from each of the WHO’s group get together twice a year and vote on the strains to include in the shot. Although a lot of time and resources go into the shot itself it is still not more than an educated guess.  Click Here For Reference  Click Here For Report

Remember: the flu is a virus. There’s no “treatment” for it when you go to the doctor. Questions? Ask Dr. Bucek at your next appointment!

Natural Ways Dr. Bucek Recommends To Prevent The Flu

  1.  Exercise 4-5 times per week. Regular exercise helps to build lean muscle mass, increase your body’s natural production of Growth Hormone, and helps to strengthen your cardiovascular system.  All of which helps build a stronger body, not just muscles.
  2. Sleep! The Sleep Foundation has new recommendations based on your age for the appropriate sleep duration. See picture.
  3.  Wash your hands with regular soap, not antibacterial soap. Antibacterial soap does not kill the flu virus. It kills the normal, protective bacteria that inhabit your skin leaving you more prone to infection. Regular soap works just fine!
  4. Icrease your fruits and vegetables intake. The fresher, the better. If you can’t get fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen is a fine substitute.  Eat fruits in the morning and veggies in the afternoon and evening to avoid a high sugar spike in the evening.
  5. Stay regular with your adjustments . Being on your recommended treatment plan and frequency is important to ensure better health, not just for pain control. A body that’s in better balance functions better all around. A 1992 research group found that when a thoracic (mid back) adjustment was applied to an area out of alignment, the white blood cell (neutrophil) count collected rose significantly1  So, make sure you keep up with your appointments!
  6. Schedule a Massage with Jen! Massages with Jen help to stimulate the lymphatic flow of your body and helps to remove toxins and viruses from the body. Jen can also incorporate essential oils with your massage to help this process, as well.

Stretch of the Month- Thoracic Spine Mobility

This is a great stretch to help with a stiff mid back, which genuinely comes from the over the arm movement(ex: serving a volleyball, painting a ceiling, throwing a ball). To perform, get on all fours and use your arm to help rotate your upper back to the left and right. You can also use the arm that’s bent to reach through the arm that’s supporting your body to help rotate to the other side. Do both sides and perform 10-15 repetitions each side.
